About me
Alyson joined the School of Health Sciences as a Lecturer in 2016, and in 2018 became the Program Director for the Bachelor of Exercise and Sport Science suite of programs. She completed her Bachelor and Master of Human Kinetics in Kinesiology at the University of Windsor, Ontario, Canada. She then completed her Ph.D. at the University of Saskatchewan, in Saskatchewan, Canada, where she specialized in health, exercise and sport psychology. She was funded by scholarships from the Ontario Graduate Scholarship (2010-2011) and the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (2009-2010, 2011-2014). Since arriving in Australia, Alyson has received grant funding from the Sansom Institute for Health Research (2016-2018), and won the ECR International Travel Grant in 2017 to collaborate with an international academic leader in her field.
Her research and teaching cover aspects of sport, exercise and health psychology. More specifically, she is interested in group dynamics, such as the examination of social influence (e.g., social norms) and group perceptions (e.g., cohesion, groupness), and how they relate to individual behaviour, such as sport and exercise involvement. Alyson also is interested in examining how to reduce the decline in physical activity during the transition to university from high school, through the use of social cognitions (i.e., self-efficacy), and how messages targeting health behaviours (e.g., point-of-decision prompts, mass media) influence subsequent health behaviour decisions.
