Dr Hayley Lewthwaite

Hayley is an Adjunct Research Fellow at University of South Australia, who is currently completing a postdoctoral research fellowship in the Clinical Exercise and Respiratory Physiology Lab at McGill University, Montreal, Canada. Hayley's postdoctoral fellowship has been supported by an Endeavour Research Fellowship and a Fonds de Recherche du Québec Santé (FRQS) Fellowship. Hayley is an accredited exercise physiologist and exercise scientist with Exercise and Sports Science Australia. Her research and interest is in chronic lung disease. Specifically, the impact, underlying mechanisms and management of chronic breathlessness. During her postdoctoral fellowship, Hayley will explore novel treament approaches (pharmacological and non-pharmacological) for the management of chronic breathlessness in people with chronic obstructive lung disease or interstitial lung disease, which can be used as adjunct therapies to supervised exercise training. 

Hayley completed her PhD at University of South Australia in 2018, which explored the interrelationships between use of time (physical activity, sedentary behaviour and sleep) and health outcomes for people with chronic lung disease. As a PhD candidate, Hayley maintained an active role as a medical scientist utilising her experience in applied clinical exercise physiology to conduct and interpret cardiopulmonary exercise tests (CPET) for a range of preclinical and clinical populations.
