Dr Josh McCarthy is a Senior Lecturer at the University of South Australia, and is the Program Director for the Bachelor of Visual Effects. He also teaches into the Bachelor of Film and Television, the Graduate Certificate in Compositing and Tracking and the Graduate Certificate in Dynamic Effects and Lighting, the Graduate Certificate in 3D Animation, and the Graduate Certificate in Creature Effects.
Josh teaches across a diverse array of disciplines, including visual effects, film, photography, and digital media, and has a particular interest in the cinematic language of contemporary film directors, and more broadly, the role design language plays across different creative fields.

About me
Dr Josh McCarthy is a Senior Lecturer at the University of South Australia, and is the Program Director for the Bachelor of Visual Effects. Josh teaches across a diverse array of disciplines, including visual effects, film, photography, and digital media, and has a particular interest in the cinematic language of contemporary film directors, and more broadly, the role design language plays across different creative fields.
Josh has published more than 30 papers exploring emerging technologies in learning and teaching, and has exhibited his photography work at various South Australian art galleries. Josh is also the director of Electricityscape, an Adelaide-based company delivering design, media and photography services to local and international clients.
Josh was awarded a Teaching Fellowship by Advance HE in 2023.
