About me
Mike Musker has worked in Mental Health as a senior registered mental health nurse for over 30 years. He was in a Senior Research Fellow position at the Mind & Brain Theme at the South Australian Health and Medical Research Institute (SAHMRI) for 7 years before he became an Enterprise Fellow here at UniSA . He was the winner of the Nurse Excellence Award in South Australia (2013) and was the head nurse of the Forensic Mental Health Service in the role of Advanced Clinical Services Coordinator & Clinical Consultant. Mike has taught in an adjunct capacity at all three major universities here in South Australia. He is currently an Enterprise Fellow in Nursing. Mike is the Co-Lead in the campaign to address loneliness and mental health distress in men through the 'Secret Lives of Australian Men' campaign. Men keep a lot of their personal issues secret and we want to know about what makes them uncomfortable, embarrassed and isolated in their journey. This campaign will address the wellbeing of men and research how we can help. Mike’s current research has focused on depression and obesity, the genetics of depression, chronic fatigue syndrome, mental health promotion, and consumer involvement in mental health care. After completing his Masters in Health Promotion Research and Policy Change, he completed a Post Graduate Diploma in Education at the University of Manchester. He completed his PhD researching Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder in Perpetrators of Homicide with the University of Adelaide. Mike also completed a Masters of Clinical Science with the Joanna Briggs Institute (University of Adelaide) reviewing Proinflammatory Cytokines in Chronic Fatigue Syndrome. He has also completed a Post Graduate Diploma in Hypnotherapy with the South Australian Hypnosis Society (SASH) and is an accredited trainer of the Mental Health First Aid program.
