Dr Nathan James Crane is a design thinker, writer and educator in the School of Art, Architecture and Design. His work operates within a research interest in writing/design principles. Nathan takes a multi-disciplinary approach to design resolution, which moves beyond the physical and aesthetic, and incorporates a writing/research practice which informs and evolves the result (which is ongoing) in new, dynamic directions and propensities outside the usual field of Interior Architecture.

About me
Dr Nathan James Crane is a design thinker, writer and educator in the School of Art, Architecture and Design. His work operates within a research interest in writing/design principles. Nathan takes a multi-disciplinary approach to design resolution, which moves beyond the physical and aesthetic, and incorporates a writing/research practice which informs and evolves the result (which is ongoing) in new, dynamic directions and propensities outside the usual field of Interior Architecture.
He have strong interests in 20th Century French Post-structuralist literature theory and semiotics which informs his spatial understandings and design practices. Nathan is currently a member of the Société internationale pour la promotion des recherches sur l’écriture (International Society for the Advancement of Writing Research) (ISAWR). During his design-school training, Nathan articulated a unique approach to Interior Architecture and design philosophy, of which he based his Honours thesis, 'FROM HERE TO PROPENSITY: design as (a) spiritual practice...or, (my) way to practice..', and his recently conferred PhD Thesis, titled, 'EXPLORING THE WRITTEN WORLD: Writing as a Spatial Practice'.
Working on both commercial and residential projects in Australia, Nathan represented the School of Art, Architecture and Design at the 21st Yodex Design conference in Taipai, Taiwan in April 2012. He also travelled in 2011 to represent the University of South Australia at the Salone Internazionale del Mobile in Milan, Italy.
Nathan is a trained interior designer and former editor of annual design publication FORM Journal. He is a widely published design writer on titles including The Adelaide Review, HOT100 Wines, LUXURY and Marmalade magazines.
As a freelance consultant and design writer working on both commercial and private projects in Australia, Nathan has engaged exstensively with businesses on collaborative branding campaigns, assisting with their creative direction + brand positioning. He has also studied entrepreneuriship, leadership and communications and runs his own media relations and communications agency, called Minutia.
