Professor Peter Buckskin is Dean: Aboriginal Engagement & Strategic Projects (AESP) at the University of South Australia (UniSA).
Newly created in 2016, the Dean will play an important role in promoting the University nationally and internationally and providing advice to the University on building and strengthening relationships with Aboriginal communities.

About me

Prior to taking up the position of Dean: AESP, Professor Buckskin was Dean: Indigenous Scholarship, Engagement and Research; and prior to that was Dean and Head of School of the David Unaipon College of Indigenous Education and Research.
Before joining UniSA in 2006, Professor Buckskin has held high public office as a Ministerial Adviser, Superintendent of Schools, and a Senior Executive at both State and Commonwealth level in the portfolios of Aboriginal Affairs, Employment, Education and Training.
In 2012, Professor Buckskin was appointed Convenor of the State's Advisory Committee on the recognition of Aboriginal people in the South Australian Constitution Act 1934.
In 2013, Professor Buckskin co-chaired the development of UniSA’s Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP).
In conjunction with UniSA College, Professor Buckskin led the development of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Deadly Alumni Chapter which is specific to the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander graduates of UniSA.
Professor Buckskin successfully project directed a $7.5 million More Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Teachers Initiative (MATSITI) – a collaboration which established 60 school and university partnerships, compiled comprehensive data and evidence in teacher education and school employment, and developed a comprehensive series of promotional strategies for Indigenous teachers to consider education a career of choice.
Professor Buckskin in his role as Dean: AESP, is also Co-Chair of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander University of Choice project; Member of the Indigenous Participation, Education, Employment Group (IPEEG) and Chair of the Aboriginal Employment Working Group (AEWG).

More Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Teachers Initiative (MATSITI)
MATSITI - a four year national scheme to increase the number of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people entering and remaining in professional teaching positions in Australian schools.
The $7.5 million MATSITI Initiative was announced by the then Commonwealth Minister for Schools, Early Childhood and Youth, the Hon. Peter Garrett MP, in July 2011 and was funded by the Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet.
The project concluded on 31 May 2016 with reporting commitments concluding 24 June 2016.
Respect, Relationships and Reconciliation (RRR)
RRR: - an on-line module to support the provision of initial teacher education to improve teaching in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander education.
In response to a request for proposal from the Australian Institute for Teaching and School Leadership (AITSL) in 2013; UniSA along with consortium partners Australian Council of Deans of Education (ACDE), University of Southern Queensland and La Trobe University successfully tendered for $385,000 project.
AITSL have provided an additional $85,000 to complete and release the project in June 2016.
Excellence and Equity in Maths: Indigenous Student Achievement and Tertiary Aspirations in Mathematics
In 2014, the MATSITI team was successful in winning $783,000 in Federal Government funding from the Australian Maths and Science Partnerships Program (AMSPP). This project was led in partnership with the Australian Association of Mathematics Teachers.
The three-year national project aims to achieve mathematics excellence and equity in schooling and tertiary education choices for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students. The initiative aims to:
Accelerating Indigenous Higher Education
In 2015, the National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Higher Education Consortium [Aboriginal Corporation] (NATSIHEC) was identified as the key mechanism for engagement regarding Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Higher Education. As Chair, Professor Buckskin secured $335,000 from the Commonwealth Department of Education and Training funding for the Accelerating Indigenous Higher Education project for 2016.
