Sandy is a Project Officer: Research for UniSA Business. She has worked for Professor Andrew Beer since 2012, initially as his Research Assistant at the Centre for Housing Urban and Regional Planning (CHURP) at the University of Adelaide, now continuing to support him since his move to the University of South Australia in late 2015. She was Project Officer for the life of the recently completed ARC Linkage Project: Local Government and Housing in Australia for the 21st Century and is currently Project Officer for the CRC TiME Post Mining Land Use – Practice Mapping Options project.
During her time at CHURP, Sandy was involved in many projects including the Great Australian Bight Research Program; an AHURI project The role of private rental support programs in housing outcomes for vulnerable Australians; A Home for All: Cost-benefit Analysis of the Wyatt Trust Housing Initiative Grants; Regional Australia Institute: developing proxy indicators of capacity and engagement in economic development for Australian local institutions; Second homes: impacts on local government; Public housing stock transfer – impacts and implications for local government; Showcasing Innovation – case studies of recent homelessness initiatives; the Kilburn and Blair Athol community engagement project; and Structural adjustment programs in Australia: community impacts and the evaluation of outcomes. Sandy has co-authored two book chapters: ‘Housing in South Australia’ in State of South Australia: Turbulent Times (2013) and 'Housing and Housing Policy' in State of South Australia: State of Transformation (2019). She has a number of other publications including journal articles and reports.
Prior to her role with Andrew Beer, Sandy was a student at the University of Adelaide. She graduated with a BA in 2012 majoring in Classical Studies and History. During the final stages of her degree she was selected for the university’s Arts Internship Program with the Migration Museum in Adelaide. This culminated in a substantial report on Dutch migrants in South Australia which was published by the Netherlands Embassy in Canberra. She was awarded a Summer Research Scholarship in 2011-2012 during which time she gained experience in research techniques. During 2011 and 2012 she was employed as a casual Research Assistant at the University of Adelaide.
Before pursuing her academic interests, Sandy had a long career in the printing and publishing industries as a desktop publisher. She has also served as an electoral officer for the State and Federal Electoral Commissions.
