Research interests focus on aspects of languages teaching and learning in schools, including curriculum design, textbook design, learner engagement, and assessment practices. My primary focus is on Chinese language teaching and learning, particularly on issues in teaching and learning Chinese characters.

Currently involved as a Lead Researcher in a federally funded national project being undertaken by the AFMLTA to develop a National Strategy and Plan for Language Education in Australian schools.

Member of the Australia-China relations and Higher Education research network at Deakin University which seeks to address the challenges for the Australia-China bilateral education relationship emerging from the current climate. The initial study of the network will focus on Capturing tertiary and schools-based educators’ experiences of the impact of current tensions in the Australia-China relationship.
Recent conference presentations (2021)
Keynote address at the Chinese Language Conference hosted by the Swire Chinese Language Foundation, London: ‘Developing literacy skills in Chinese: lessons from Australia’ held online on Monday 21 June 2021.
Presentation at the National Summit of the federally funded National Strategy and Plan for Languages Education Project on which he is a Lead Researcher, on Friday June 25 2021. The presentation outlined the findings of a national survey of Language teachers included in a Discussion Paper tables at the Summit. The Summit was held to contribute to the development of the National Strategy and Plan to be delivered to the federal government in June 2022.
Part of a panel presentation on the federally-funded National Strategy and Plan for Languages Education project, and a paper ‘A review of the findings of the national survey of Languages teachers’ undertaken as part of that project, presented at the biennial International Languages Conference held by the Australian Federation of Modern Language Teachers Associations (AFMLTA), held online July 5&6 2021.
