My graduation thesis was entitled, ‘Family Business Engagement’. It examines reported reluctance among family business people to seek external advice on family business challenges. It finds more willingness than had been widely assumed, mainly because the extent of peer advice has not been appreciated. Use of professional advice is often deterred by practitioners' lack of essential soft skills.

Before that I had been a senior public servant in UK and Australia; a senior manager in the National Economic Development Council, London; a researcher at the Bureau of Industry Economics, Canberra; a research team leader at RMIT University; a researcher at the National Institute for Economic and Industry Research, Melbourne; a manager in the UK foundry industry; and director of a UK joint industry council.
