About me
Alpana Sivam is a senior lecturer of Urban and Regional Planning program at the University of South Australia. Alpana has extensive experience in the public and private sectors, having held a variety of senior and executive positions in India and Australia.
As an architect and urban planner, her interests lie in the intersections between these two professions. Her teaching and research mainly focus on the social and urban design aspects of physical planning and urban development. The big issue behind her research and practice is how to make sustainable, climate resilience and an age friendly neighbourhood through interdisciplinary collaboration. Alpana’s current research focuses on housing and ageing, open space, mitigation of climate change in built environment, developing sustainable and age friendly places in a suburbanising world through a combination of design and policy.
Alpana’s scholarly outputs have been documented in over 100 peer-reviewed publications. Her research has been supported by competitive grants including prestigious funding schemes such as the Australian Research Council Linkage Project Grant; Commonwealth Government of Australia Grant and South Australian Government. Alpana’s early career included projects as designing and implementation of one million population sub city Dwarka, Delhi, India.
Her teaching addresses industry and academic concerns by exposing students to ‘real life’ planning and providing them with opportunities to apply their disciplinary theoretical knowledge in real-world practice settings. The quality and impact of her approach been recognised by 2018 Australian Awards for University Teaching Citation.

Alpana’s extensive experience in both the public and private sectors in Australia and India, has allowed her to develop courses that prepare graduates to have the knowledge, skills and qualities to contribute to the challenges of the urban future. Alpana teaches undergraduate, postgraduate and research students of Urban and Regional program. Much of her teaching utilises project work as a vehicle for learning and Adelaide as a laboratory.
In sustainable Urban Design Studio through her teaching, she strives to provide a stimulating student learning environment. This includes using real life projects as an integral part of her curriculum, innovatively linking theory with planning practice. The curriculum introduces students not only to the theoretical principles of planning, but also provides them with opportunities inside and outside the classroom to contextualise their learning through authentic learning tasks, assessment, and interactions with industry professionals. This is achieved by facilitating students to prepare an urban design framework for a “live” project in collaboration with a government client, with the potential for its future implementation by the client. Students understand real life scenarios for designing and implementing urban development projects.
The quality and impact of her teaching approach been recognised with the award of a UniSA Citation (2017) and 2018 Australian Awards for University Teaching (AAUT) Citation for Outstanding Contributions to Student Learning for ‘designing learning experiences using real world ‘live’ projects that enable students to graduate as successful planners with commensurate industry skills and professional knowledge.’
