Dr. Ambika Murthy is a postdoctoral researcher at the Centre for Cancer biology, University of South Australia. She currently works on infectious diseases, inflammation and cancer with aspirations to translate scientific findings to improve human health. Prior to her postdoctoral role, she earned a PhD degree from the Institute of Molecular Bioscience (IMB), University of Queensland, and a master’s degree in Bioengineering from Virginia Tech, USA. Her Ph D thesis focused on understanding interactions between uropathogenic bacteria and the innate immune system. In particular, her findings could be used to treat superbug infections effectively by boosting the patient’s innate immune response.

Ambika is passionate about communicating her research findings to scientific community and general public. She was one of the Young Science Ambassadors motivating and inspiring school children and teachers for STEM education across Queensland including rural regions. As a science ambassador she has showcased the cutting-edge research at IMB to general public. To satisfy her insatiable passion to make a positive impact on society, she volunteers for online teaching (Science) for remote schools in developing countries that lack infrastructure and teachers. In this regard, she has conducted regular classes by developing lesson plans, tailoring teaching style with an emphasis on problem-based learning to accommodate students from different backgrounds.
