About me
Dr Andrea Stringer leads the Gut Health group, with research focussing on the role of vitamin D in the intestine. Andrea's broad area of research has focussed primarily on gut function, particularly on the role of the gut microbiome in this environment. She works closely with the Musculoskeletal Biology Research Group investigating links between the gut health and bone outcomes.
Andrea's broad area of expertise is in developing strategies for preventing or treating oral and gastrointestinal damage following cancer treatments (mucositis) to reduce the burden of cancer. She has been involved in multiple pre-clinical investigations with growth factors, and probiotics to investigate their effectiveness in treating cancer treatment-induced mucositis. Andrea's work has also encompassed identifying the mechanisms underpinning the damage that occurs following cancer treatments, with studies investigating the microbiome, inflammatory cytokines, the mucus barrier, and the enteric nervous system. Her current work focusses on the role of vitamin D in the intestine, specifically the effects of the microbiome, inflammatory cytokines and the mucus barrier.

My current research focusses on the digestive tract. The two streams of work are the undesirable effects of cancer therapy (those other than curing the cancer), and the role of the intestine in vitamin D metabolism and bone health and repair. My current projects are:
- damage to tissue along the entire digestive tract, including the mouth, and the role of endogenous microbiota and inflammatory signalling following cancer therapy
- intestinal function related to vitamin D synthesis in the intestine and the downstream effects on bone, and the effects of vitamin D on the intestine.
