About me
Hello,
Welcome to my Homepage.
I retired from the Univeristy at the end of 2020, but have maintained Adjunct Professor (Education and Social Development) status since then, continuing to write and work in the areas bullying, cyberbullying, co-participatory design, youth voice, sexting, peer relationships, wellbeing and mental health.
In 2023 I was honoured to receive an Australian Day Award (Member of the Order of Australia (AM): for significant service to tertiary education, to research and to youth.
Qualificiations:
After completing my doctorate (2005), I became Program Director of the undergraduate and graduate Bachelor of Education programs in the School of Education, UniSA, one of the largest in the University at that time (1100 students).
My early research career focussed on girls’ peer relationships and indirect/covert bullying behaviours and in translating this research into practice: highlighting the need for schools to include girls in anti-bullying policies and programs, which at that time focused on overt behaviours generally associated with boys.
Much of my research career has been spent investigating peer relationships, and the ways in which bullying operates across gender, age, and most recently off/online settings, also exploring the positive uses of technology to support relationships in educational settings, the impacts of technology on youth mental health, and as resources to support youth mental health and wellbeing.
I have an active interest in related areas, such as sexting and the law as it relates to young people, and have made an important research contribution through employing youth voice and participatory co-design as a methodology in cyberbullying research.
I have led major national and local projects:
I have been a Chief Investigator (CI) on the following national and international projects/grants:
I was one of only four Australians invited to participate in the European Co-operation of Science and Technology (COST) Action on Cyberbullying (ISO801) (project management committee: 2008-2012) and the European/Indian/Australian collaboration to examine bullying practices in India (2013-14), leading to being named an Australian Academy of Science Eminent Speaker (2014) which included an invitation to discuss our work with the Education and Science Attaches, Australian High Commission, New Delhi.
My publications have received nearly 3000 literature citations (Google Scholar). I am a member of the editorial boards for: the International Journal of Bullying Prevention; Pastoral Care in Education; International Journal of Emotional Education.
I am an appointed international member of the Centre for Resilience and Socio-Emotional Health (CRES) University of Malta.
I Chair and am an inaugural member of AUARA: Australian Universities’ Anti-bullying Research Alliance, an informal collaboration of Australia’s leading cyber/bullying researchers who join forces as needed to advocate to government and respond to Parliamentary and Senate Enquiries about children and young people's health and wellbeing.
I am an inaugural Ministerial appointment to the SA Child Development Council, and Chair of the SA Charter for Children sub-committee.
I have always been concerned about the way that bullying impacts on families and communities: not only the child who is targeted, and seek to find positive ways to engage with community about these antisocial behaviours in an increasingly mobile environment.
Please feel free to contact me should you require further information about the Research and Consultancy services I can offer.
