Bastian is a Materials Scientist and Engineer with a specific focus on thin-film coatings and advanced manufacturing. He is currently employed at SMR Automotive Australia and holds an Adjunct Research Associate Position at the University of South Australia. He undertook his PhD at the Future Industries Institute at the University of South Australia and was a holder of an Excellerate Australia PhD scholarship. His project delivered innovative solutions for easy-to-clean systems and was in collaboration with a tier 1 automotive supplier providing the company with new perspectives for the future.
As a result of his research achievements, he was a National Finalist of the 2015 Early Career Researcher Showcase, organised by the CRC Association and sponsored by CSIRO. He was also the runner-up in UniSA’s 2015 3 Minute Thesis Grand Final and was awarded two best poster awards at international conferences.
In 2018 Bastian won funding from the Future Industries Accelerator Fund for a 12 months mobility grant and an ECR/MCR Divisional Industry Travel Award. Furthermore, in the same year, his work helped to attract a $0.5M grant from Excellerate Australia for the project.
Bastian led teams and committees on a number of occasions. He chaired a committee organising a Professional Development Workshop for PhD's working under the Excellerate Australia CRC and was a founding member and president of the UniSA Badminton Club, one of the largest sports clubs within the University of South Australia. Bastian is currently representing his colleagues as the Vice-Chair of the Future Industries Institute Early Career Researcher Group.
His personal interests include the dynamics behind the collaboration of the private sector with academia, effective communication of scientific content and sparking scientific interest in students.
