Catherine is a Research Fellow at The Australian Alliance for Social Enterprise. Catherine's academic background includes the disciplines of anthropology, politics and public health. Catherine is an experienced qualitative researcher with a particular interest in participatory research methods. In recent years she has been developing methods (e.g. using interactive maps and emoji) to improve participant engagement and interaction with the research topic. Her overarching research interest is in social justice and inequities and how these may be overcome.

Catherine joined UniSA in January 2019. Catherine has worked as a researcher at Flinders University in the Australian Centre for Community Services Research 2016-2018 and the Southgate Institute from 2009-2014. She also taught in the Flinders University Graduate Entry Medical Program (6 years) and the Master of Speech Pathology as a Problem Based Learning Tutor in 2018 and 2019. Previously, Catherine worked at the University of Adelaide (2004-2008) on an ARC linkage funded Gender Analysis Project and at the Cancer Council SA as a cancer prevention project officer, working with local government on urban design to support physical activity participation and SunSmart environments (2001-2004). Before re-entering university in 1995, Catherine worked in tourism and hospitality and as a Registered Nurse. Catherine owned and managed a 4WD outback tourism operation and a backpacker establishment in Broken Hill, NSW (1990-1996).
Catherine is a chief investigator on a research partnership called 'Hearing Country Voices' with industry partner Uniting Country SA in Port Pirie. This program of research explores the experiences of people living and working in regional, rural and remote South Australia. Her most recent studies include: the experiences of children in regional out-of-home care; what is good practice in working in the country with people with multiple and complex needs; an investigation of young country women's views on and experiences of intimate partner violence; and, the economic and social value of non-government community service organisations located in non-metropolitan areas on their regions, beyond the value of the services ... Catherine is a chief investigator on a research partnership called 'Hearing Country Voices' with industry partner Uniting Country SA in Port Pirie. This program of research explores the experiences of people living and working in regional, rural and remote South Australia. Her most recent studies include: the experiences of children in regional out-of-home care; what is good practice in working in the country with people with multiple and complex needs; an investigation of young country women's views on and experiences of intimate partner violence; and, the economic and social value of non-government community service organisations located in non-metropolitan areas on their regions, beyond the value of the services they provide.
Catherine is also a chief investigator of a one year research project with the Regional Australia Institute, exploring the effects of disasters and COVID-19 on regional businesses and country towns. Catherine has a current research partnership with One Culture Football, which provides inclusive soccer programs to young people (13-25 years) from migrant and refugee backgrounds and to people 6 to 65 living with a disability. Catherine's research with One Culture Football provides an evidence base to support their programs, which aim to create positive engagement and personal development opportunities and to foster community connections.
