About me
Dr Connie Caruso is the Program Director of Laboratory Medicine at the University of South Australia. Connie is part of the Mechanisms in Cell Biology and Disease Research Group, at the Sansom Institute for Health Research, working in the areas of prostate, colorectal and ovarian cancers. Connie is also a member of the Teaching Innovation and Research Team for Learning at UniSA. She is a member of the Australian Institute of Medical Scientists (‘AIMS’) and the Histology Group of South Australia.
Connie has been instrumental in leading the program from wholly face to face teaching to a blended teaching and learning approach. Connie has been awarded competitive digital learning grants which have allowed her to set up digital learning platforms, particularly in the virtual microscopy field and social media teaching, creating online-learning communities for teaching traditionally hands-on practical work.
Connie has completed courses on engaging learners online and is currently completing a Graduate Diploma in Education Studies (Digital Learning), where she has developed a keen interest in the study of the Connectivism theory of learning. Prior to being the Program Director of Laboratory Medicine, Connie was and still holds the positions of Histology and Pathology coordinator for the laboratory medicine program, overseeing a substantial lift in pass rate by implementing new learning theories and digital technologies to her courses.
Before working at the University of South Australia, Connie was the lead postdoctoral researcher in the Gastroenterology Research Laboratory at SA Pathology in South Australia, Australia, publishing peer-reviewed papers on the topic of colorectal cancer.
Connie earned a PhD in Biomedical Science (Molecular Pathology) from the University of South Australia, and a Bachelor of Laboratory Medicine.
