Gillian Brown has held a leading role in curatorial development at the Samstag Museum of Art since 2011, having previously worked in galleries across the private and not-for-profit sectors in Melbourne.
Experienced in the commissioning and presentation of installation and time-based media, Gillian has managed and curated numerous large-scale projects by Australian and international contemporary artists. These projects include exhibitions at Samstag Museum of Art with Lisa Reihana, David Claerbout, Louise Haselton, Fiona Tan and Jesse Jones, and collaborations with peer organisations Independent Curators International, New York and Singapore Art Museum. In 2018 she spent time based at the Museum of Contemporary Art & Design, Manila as part of the Asialink Arts Global Project Space Creative Exchange, and in 2019 initiated (with Samstag Director Erica Green) the 'Adelaide//International', a three-year project presented for the Adelaide Festival that highlighted confluences in local and international artistic practices.
A regular contributor to public discussions and judging panels, Gillian holds a Master of Arts (Art History) from the University of Adelaide. She co-founded and was co-editor (2014-2019) of the online critical arts writing platform fine print, and regularly writes about contemporary art, recently co-authoring 'Act Natural', a monograph focusing on the work of Louise Haselton published by Wakefield Press.
