About me
Greg gained his PhD in March 2019 with The University of Queensland. His thesis focussed on the metrology of tissue iron by relaxometry, and demonstrations of the clinical course of disease from secondary iron overload in a 12 year population study. The work hads direct relevance to clinical practice with close connections to QSM and other quantitative methods.
A registered Medical Radiation Practitioner with foundation experience in CT scanning, angiography, cardiac imaging, and interventional procedures, as well as radiography in acute hospital settings. Greg has focussed on Magnetic Resonance Imaging since 1986 when the modality was introduced to Australia, becoming an international opinion leader, through faculty teaching at international conferences, the production of early post graduate teaching materials, and undergraduate lectures.
He has mainatined informal professional communication vehicles from newsletters, an early MRI web portal, and with a strong on-line presence in email forums and social media since the mid 1990’s. Currently, Greg is a regular correspondant on the Facebook group MRI Safety, and manages the Facebook group, MRI World, with over 23,000 followers.
Greg has evolved an international reputation as a leader on the role of the radiographer in MRI. He received the Crues Kressel Award for outstanding service to MRI education in 2003, and is a Fellow and Honorary (Life) Member of the Society for Magnetic Resonance Radiographers and Technologists (SMRT), a section of the International Society for Magnetic Resonance Imaging (ISMRM).
His research roles include development of MR protocols and imaging for early fMRI research with the Flinders University, anatomical research with the University of Adelaide, brain trauma studies with psychology researchers from the University of Adelaide , and the University of Queensland. He has developed multi-centre MRI protocols for clinical trials in the fields of Alzheimers’ disease, Iron overload, and Multiple Sclerosis, and managed commercial trial imaging to investigate neurodenegerative conditions, polycystic kidney disease, iron chelation, and MR contrast agents. Additional consultancy has been provided to the SAHMRI LARIF MRI facillity for a range of MRI research projects.
In his professional practice, Greg is regarded as a reference point for MR safety questions of a clincal and organizational nature, and has directed and consulted on the purchase of MRI Scanners for several Australian hospitals, drawing on his knowledgel of the evolving MR hardware trends and directions in clincal and technical practice.
Currently advising on one Honours project and is currently co-supervisor on two Honours project, and one PhD student.
