I have resumed the role of Program Director for the Master of Urban and Regional Planning (including Graduate Diploma ) and the Bachelor of Urban and Regional Planning (Hons) in UniSA Creative (which incorporates the former School of Art, Architecture and Design). South Australia is entering into a new era of land use policy making and development control with the introduction of the metropolitan component of the Planning and Design Code on March 19, 2021. You can access details at here. Development and implementation of the Code has been led by the hard working team at the Deparment of Planning,Transport and Infrastructure (DPTI). Our students have been engaging with the change process for the last 5 years and our program content has enabled students to adopt a critical perspective.
My enthusiasm for the field of urban and regional planning was in part kindled through the experience of peri-urban post-migration life on the fringe of multi-cultural Melbourne and also a period as an elected member and then mayor of the City of Port Adelaide Enfield in Adelaide. My academic education has largely focused on sociology. I felt very honored to be awarded the Peter Harrison Memorial Prize at the State of Australian Cities Conference in Sydney in 2013 for a paper based on my PhD research analysing the suburban context of adjustment to retrenchment in the automotive industry. The paper discussed the impacts and opportunities that arise during and following retrenchment and how new jobs, the journey to work and the meaning of home play a role in adjusting to new circumstances. Coping with involuntary or voluntary job loss is difficult however I am critical of the moral panic surrounding retrenchment - view the Conversation article here
This year I will be teaching Planning for Healthy Cities (ARCH5043), AAD Internship (GRAP5004), Urban Regeneration (ARCH5051) and i have an oversight role with the University Online Course Ageing and Disability Friendly Environments; https://online.unisa.edu.au/courses/163321
