About me
Jonathan Crichton is Associate Professor in Applied Linguistics and Professorial Lead (Teaching and Learning), University of South Australia, and Visiting Fellow in Psychiatry, Adelaide School of Medicine, University of Adelaide.
His academic background is in philosophy (BA Hons, York) and later linguistics (MA, PhD, Macquarie). In between, he was Gasthörer in philosophy at University of Stuttgart while doing an apprenticeship in viticulture in Bad Cannstatt. He has a longstanding interest in how language affects people's lives in profound but often unnoticed ways, and his research has largely focused on professional and organisational communication, particularly in health settings. He has been involved in a wide range of projects with practitioners and clients in psychiatry, mental health and aged care that aim to enhance how language is used and understood at critical times in people's lives. Allied to this focus he has an enduring research interest in the relationship between language and ethics, particularly as this bears on qualitative methodologies. His research is reflected in over 70 refereed publications including five monographs / edited volumes.
He is series editor of three Palgrave research series: Communicating in Professions and Organisations, Research and Practice in Applied Linguistics, and Palgrave Advances in Language and Linguistics; and a member of the advisory board of the Journal of Applied Linguistics and Professional Practice.
His published books include Exploring Discourse in Context and in Action (2017), Communicating Risk (2016), Discourses of Trust (2013), Discourses of Deficit (2011), and The Discourse of Commercialisation (2010). Books under contract include Critical Moments in Health Communication, Palgrave, and, with Gillian Martin, Trinity College, Dublin, the Handbook of Intercultural Communication in Health Care, De Gruyter.
