About me
Professor Marie T Williams (PhD, Grad Cert (Cardioresp Physio), B.App.Sc (Physio) is a member of the Innovation, Implementation And Clinical Translation in Health (IIMPACT) research concentration, University of South Australia.
Marie is a physiotherapy academic with over twenty five years’ experience in physiotherapy education and research training (honours and higher research degrees) including the design and completion of clinical rehabilitation research (primary and secondary studies). Her areas of research include the management of people with chronic respiratory disease with particular reference to the mechanisms underpinning the perceptual experience of dyspnoea and how (or whether) the impact of this sensation can be substantially altered.
Marie is an active researcher (>140 peer reviewed papers, >$1mk research income, 21 PhD candidates completed) in breathlessness science with a focus on understanding, assessing and management of dyspnoea. Contributions to breathlessness research include confirmation of multidimensionality of breathless sensations (older people with and without chronic pulmonary conditions, contexts (actual vs recalled), associations between perceptual experience and morbidity, validation/direct comparison of multidimensional instruments for breathlessness and impact of dyspnoea interventions (pulmonary rehabilitation, cognitive behavioural therapy NHMRC# 1010309).
Current projects include building health workforce capacity for understanding, explaining and managing chronic breathlessness.
