Professor Martin Shanahan is Professor of Economic and Business History in the School of Business and Visiting Professor at Gothenburg University, Sweden.
Prof Shanahan holds degrees in economics, politics and law and is a specialist in Australian economic and business history. His PhD was awarded the Butlin Prize in economic history in Australia and New Zealand.
Prof Shanahan has written over a hundred peer reviewed articles, book chapters, books and conference papers on historical aspects of wealth and income distribution, business cartels, trade practice law, and water use. Prof Shanahan has written over a hundred peer reviewed articles, book chapters, books and conference papers on historical aspects of wealth and income distribution, business cartels, trade practice law, and water use. He has also published extensively on university-student learning of economics, students’ research conceptions and threshold concepts. He was awarded an Australian Learning and Teaching Council Award for Teaching Excellence in 2009.
A successful grant winner, Prof Shanahan has been involved in several Australian Research Council Discovery and Linkage grants, as well as British and European grants. He is currently participating in international studies on cartels, urban water systems in Australia and living standards.
For the past decade, the work of Prof Shanahan and his colleagues has seen first-year economic students being asked to think about how they learn, as well as what they learn. The software underlying this work has been licensed to several universities around the world.
Professor Shanahan co-edited the Australian Economic History Review for a decade, and is a currently a board member of Business History, the Australian Economic History Review and the International Review of Economic Education. He has served on the executive of the International Economic History Association and is the immediate past President of the Economic History Society of Australia and New Zealand.

I currently teach: Macroeconomics to first-year students. In recent years I have also taught Economic Principles to masters students and International Trade. I supervise a number of PhD students. Together with colleagues I have received an Australian Learning and Teaching Council Award for Teaching Excellence and a Carrick Award for outstanding contribution to student learning . This was for our work on 'Learning to Learn' in Economics. My former PhD students have gone on to work in universities, regulation authorities and overseas in the private sector.
