About me
I graduated with a PhD degree in sociology from the University of South Australia in 2020. My thesis examined the entwined histories of orientalism and social science and their implications for the study of Islam and Islamic phenomena. The thesis, titled 'The question of jihadism: a critique of Eurocentric reason', was defended at viva voce and awarded a 'pass forthwith'. Before moving to Australia in 2015, I worked as a human rights professional and as a freelance journalist in Gaza, Palestine, where I did school education and earned my first university degree in English literature at the Islamic University of Gaza. I then moved to London, in 2012, where I obtained an MSc degree in human rights (sociology) as a British Council Chevening scholar at the LSE Sociology Center for the Study of Human Rights. Given my inter- and trans-disciplinary academic training, my interests are varied and encompass the fields of sociology, anthropology, international relations, political theology, political theory, philosophy and history of science, religious studies, language and linguistics, and media and communication studies. I find this both challenging and invigorating. Currently, I teach full-time in the journalism, media, and communication programs at the University of South Australia Online.
