He has international, cross-disciplinary research experience in Education, Psychology and Public Health, with research expertise in child and adolescent behaviour and wellbeing. Dr Tippett earnt his PhD at the University of Warwick in the UK where he explored socioecological correlates and outcomes of adolescent bullying. Dr Tippett is currently working on an ARC funded national research project investigating how schools transcend the past life experiences of students from refugee backgrounds by creating the social and educational conditions that enhance resilience. He has also recently contributed to two other ARC funded research projects, including as Joint Chief Investigator on a project which explored the use of disciplinary practices in schools across Australia.
Dr Tippett has successfully secured well over $500,000 in external research funding, with considerable funding in the UK as a named investigator on several significant projects. These included an evaluation of school-based anti-bullying strategies commissioned by the UK Department for Children, Schools and Families; and an Equality and Human Rights Commission funded project to review and assess local authority performance in England, Scotland and Wales. Since migrating to Australia in 2016, Dr Tippett has been part of the School Exclusions Study research team which has secured $63,000 in funding from UNICEF Australia and the South Australian, Victorian and Western Australian Commissioners of Children and Young People.
Over the course of his academic career, Dr Tippett has collaborated extensively with a significant number of key education organisations in Australia and the UK, including the Australian Government Department of Education, multiple state education departments (New South Wales, South Australia, Queensland, Tasmania, Victoria), Catholic and Independent education sectors (CESA, Brisbane Catholic Education, AISSA); and the Commissioners for Children and Young People (in South Australia, Victoria, Western Australia, and Tasmania). Dr Tippett has also successfully collaborated with the South Australian Equal Opportunity Commission and with a range of NGOs such as the Alannah and Madeline Foundation, ReachOut Australia, headspace, National Children’s Bureau (UK) and the Anti-Bullying Alliance (UK).
Dr Tippett has co-edited a book and written ten book chapters. He has also produced several highly cited journal articles, including articles in the Lancet Psychiatry, the American Journal of Public Health, Aggressive Behavior and the Journal of Child Psychology and Psychiatry. His paper entitled Cyberbullying: Its nature and impact in secondary school pupils was republished in the latter journal’s 60th anniversary edition as the 5th most cited paper in that journal’s history. Dr Tippett’s research has earned him considerable media attention worldwide, including an invitation to write for The Conversation.
