Dr Hickey is a Research Fellow in the Clinical and Health Sciences Academic Unit at The University of South Australia. He is the Senior Organic Chemist in both the Bioinorganic Synthesis and Imaging Group, led by A/Prof Sally Plush and the Mechanisms in Cell Biology and Disease Research Group led by Prof Doug Brooks. He is particuarly interested in the lipid metabolic pathway and how its dysregulation is associated with several disease states. About me
Dr Hickey is a Research Fellow in the Clinical and Health Sciences Academic Unit at The University of South Australia. He is the Senior Organic Chemist in both the Bioinorganic Synthesis and Imaging Group, led by A/Prof Sally Plush and the Mechanisms in Cell Biology and Disease Research Group led by Prof Doug Brooks. He is particuarly interested in the lipid metabolic pathway and how its dysregulation is associated with several disease states. Creating tools to better understand lipid metabolic pathways as well as exploiting these processes from a therapeutic perspective underpins much of Dr Hickey's research. As such, his research can be broadly classified into two areas;
1) Development of organic and inorganic molecules suitable for live cellular imaging to better understand mechanisms which underpin disease and;
2) Preparing compounds which demonstrate therapeutic potential for anticancer, antimicrobial and antiviral applications.
He currently supervises several Honours and PhD students who are engaged in a range of projects which fit into the two aforementioned research areas. In 2018 he obtained his Masters of Teaching at the University of Adelaide and since 2018 he has been the course coordinator for the third year course MEDI3014: Current Topics in Medical Research.
