About me
Simon Cottrell is Program Coordinator for Finance and Financial Planning at the University of South Australia's Business School. He also serves as the Research Degree Coordinator for Finance and Property. Additionally, he is a member of the Centre for Markets, Values, and Inclusion (CMVI) and an allied member of the Financial Planning Association (FPA).
Prior to joining the University of South Australia, Simon held academic positions at various Australian universities and higher education providers. He coordinated postgraduate and undergraduate courses in corporate finance and financial markets at institutions such as Flinders University and Federation University Australia. Simon's dedication to expanding access to quality education also led him to deliver online courses in finance and economics to MBA students around the world. His commitment to excellence in teaching has earned him a reputation as a skilled and inspiring educator with a deep commitment to advancing knowledge and supporting the next generation of finance professionals.
Before starting his academic career, Simon held a senior position in the treasury department of an Australian commercial bank where he primarily focused on managing the bank's interest rate risk, balance sheet liquidity, and regulatory capital. He also excelled in formulating and executing capital management plans, multiple wholesale funding programs, and cross-currency and interest rate swap strategies. Drawing on his industry expertise, he pursued a Ph.D. focused on commercial bank debt funding programs. This led to the publication of numerous research papers that delve into the credit default swap markets. His research findings were published in leading finance and economics journals such as The Journal of Banking & Finance and Energy Economics. Simon is also a regular contributor to media outlets, including International Banker and the Australian Financial Review.
