About me
Welcome to the home page of Sophie Diamandi, Lecturer in Social Work, Human Services and Social Policy; and Manager of the Cultural Diversity Project - (Training, Education and Consultancy in Cultural Competency for Social Workers & Human Services workers) at the University of South Australia: Justice and Society.
I have filled senior positions including the Program Director for Student Wellbeing and Community Engagement, and Program Director for the Bachelor of Social Work and the Bachelor of Human Services.
I am also the Manager of the Uni SA Community Outreach Centre which we believe is the first community outreach centre to be based on univeristy grounds in Australia. The UniSA Community Outreach Centre is a student unit which hosts approximately 20 students who undertake their field education placement at the centre but who are also connected with an external key stakeholder agency. This co hosted model provides students with a challenging and authentic field education placement experience and prepares students for graduation and entry into the social work and human services professions.
The UniSA Communty Outreach Centre delivers a variety of group work support programs both face to face and online. These include the ACE Mentoring program for international, mature age and new commencing students, a mental health and wellbeing support group, and an Autism Spectrum Disorder group. The community outreach centre is also planning to deliver a food assistance program to students at risk of food insecurity.
In addition the UniSA Community Outreach Centre is working with older people, aged care residential facilities and primary schools to promote intergenerational learning and understanding between school children and older members of community.
The community outreach centre which is based on university grounds allows students to engage with members of the local community who visit the community outreach centre including older members, youth, women and children and those who live with mental health issues and or a disability. I am based at the Magill Campus and prior to that I lectured at the Whyalla Campus which is 400 kms north of Adelaide.
I am passionate about Human Rights;Cultural Competency, Cultural Identity, Social Justice and Equity;Refugees and New Arrivals; Child Protection;Domestic & Family Violence; Feminist Social Work and Social Work Professional Identity.
