About me
Stephen Atkinson has taught and conducted research across a number of discipline areas in the social sciences, humanities and creative arts at Charles Darwin University, Flinders University, and the University of South Australia where he is currently Program Director of the Bachelor of Contemporary Art in the South Australian School of Art | UniSA Creative.
As a teaching-focussed academic Stephen’s key interest is in the creative and critical thinking outcomes of learning through making: while courses in the Bachelor of Contemporary Art are primarily focussed on fostering curiosity and teaching how to make and conceptualise artworks, these processes also grant access to other ways of thinking and problem solving that are transferable across all other areas of life and work.
In connection with this has been the need to articulate the specific character of studio-based art education and investigate how this can be incorporated into online, mobile and real-world encounters.
In addition to academia Stephen has worked in a wide range of occupations from gardener and builder's labourer, to set-designer, and he continues to practice as a writer, musician and artist.
