About me
Hello and welcome to my webpage. My research career reflects initial training in the social sciences (counselling and psychology) and a progressive commitment to cross-cultural psychology and public health research. I hold a B.Sc. (honors) Educational Science (Counseling and Advice)’ Masters in Educational Psychology and a PhD in Health Psychology. I am a Professor in Psychology with UniSA Justice & Society. I am also a Visiting Professor at the University of New South Wales, South Western Sydney Clinical School, Faculty of Medicine.
My research leadership in the area of cross-cultural health and mental health are at a State, National, and International level, where I have made an original and significant contribution to the field. My track record in research and scholarly activities include highly competitive Category 1 ARC Linkage grants and other competitive grants from Federal, State and Industry funding sources. My research has resulted in sustainable partnerships with the cross-cultural health and mental health sector.I have a strong and focussed research track record with a high number of PhD students who have either completed (13 completions) or are continuing (10 current students). I have developed a strong reputation for my rigorous research training by producing high quality PhD graduates with sound field knowledge combined with excellent research skills. This has led to rapid employment opportunities in their specialised field in a highly competitive market.
I have also contributed significantly to the development of psychologists, social workers and nurse practitioners and other health professionals by facilitating their cross-cultural knowledge and skills in three key areas: (1) mental health, (2) physical/psychosocial health; and (3) public/community health/primary health care.
Of particular significance, was my appointment by the Governor of South Australia as a member of Health Performance Council (HPC) for four years (2008-2012) during which time I played a key role in advising the Minister for Health on the effectiveness of the health system and health outcomes for South Australians, particularly with respect to migrant and refugee populations.
I have been the recipient of a British Commonwealth Award for Excellence in Women’s Health for the ‘Non-English Speaking Background Women and Violence Project’, and the ‘Equal Opportunity Achievement Award, Individual Category’. This award cites the basis of the merit as: ‘Admirable work done to promote equal opportunity in the community’.
