I completed my PhD in May 2021 from the School of Medicine and Public Health, the University of Newcastle. I trained a BSc in Public Health (2011) and Masters in Reproductive Health (2014) from Hawassa and Haramaya Universities.
As a researcher within the University of South Australia’s Cancer Epidemiology and Population Health Research Group, my work centers on prostate cancer, the most commonly diagnosed cancer among Australian men. My broad research interests include population health research, big data analyses, quantifying the benefits and adverse effects of cancer treatments using real-world data, cancer survivourship, and measuring disparities in cancer care.

Research
I am a Cancer Council SA Research Fellow (2025-2028). My project aims to explore the drivers of psychological distress in individuals with prostate cancer and identify more effective strategies for improving their mental wellbeing. I will use these findings to inform a co-design workshop aimed at developing evidence-based recommendations for improving mental health services for people with prostate cancer.
I previously led the development of a patient-focused resource called the Prostate Cancer Outcomes Report Card, a freely available online resource designed for patients and healthcare professionals. It addresses the complexity of prostate cancer treatment information and allows patients to weigh trade-offs and choose the treatment option that best suits their individual needs and preferences. The Report Card also promotes shared decision-making between patients and healthcare professionals. It has received significant media attention, including my interview on Channel 9 News.
Another of my work on medication and service use patterns for mental health issues among prostate cancer patients, published in Psycho-Oncology (Altmetric score of 225), has been widely recognised by men’s health organisations and RACGP. It underscores the need for upfront mental health supports for men with prostate cancer.
I served as the Head of Public Health Department at Debre Markos University (DMU) in Ethiopia from 2016 to 2017. I also played a key role in various committees such as the research ethics review committee, curriculum revision committee for Public Health degree, and internal university grant review committee. Beyond academia, I have experience leading public health initiatives that have directly improved public health outcomes. I successfully coordinated a task force to control public health outbreaks (cholera and measles) in Debre Markos city in 2016. Additionally, I have received Training of Trainers from an NGO (Jhpiego) and conducted three professional training sessions for external healthcare workers on "Counselling and support for people living with HIV/AIDS”.

I was a lecturer in public health at Debre Markos University (DMU) from 2011 to 2017. During my tenure, I successfully supervised five Masters by research (two as principal supervisor and three as co-supervisor) and five Honours projects (three as principal supervisor and two as co-supervisor) to completion. In 2019, I taught courses to Master of Public Health (MPH) students and examined three MPH theses.
