About me
Welcome to my home page. My professional career includes experience in the health and tertiary education sectors as a clinician, manager, clinical educator, academic, researcher and board director. In my roles as Associate Head of School, Academic and Professorial Lead, Teaching and Learning Quality and Standards, I provided leadership to ensure the quality provision of undergraduate and postgraduate nursing and midwifery programs at UniSA. I have research interests and experience in systems and processes to facilitate quality and safety in health care, including practice and competency standards, clinical governance, risk management and information systems and processes. Through my research in the development, implementation and evaluation of competency and practice standards, I have been involved in leading and facilitating change in nursing practice at the system and organisational levels nationally and locally. I have conducted research for and co-authored Australian Nursing and Midwifery Council Competency Standards that regulate entry to practice for registered and enrolled nurses in Australia and was lead researcher for a project that developed standards for registered and enrolled nurses working in General Practice in Australia. I have also conducted research to develop competency standards and performance assessment tools for nursing roles for a leading aged care provider. A key feature of my standards research has been the development of strategies and resources to maximise uptake of standards by clinicians. Following on from NHMRC funded research exploring the role of registered nurses in the care and management of older people in hospitals, I also have a strong research interest and background in health care policy, funding and practice related to health care of older people across health care settings. I have also led projects aimed at building the capacity of the nursing and health workforce in the provision of mental health care. My research interests and expertise include qualitative approaches and discourse analysis. Please contact me if you would like to discuss higher degree research supervision.
