About me
Dr. Thomas Danny Michl is an early-career Research Fellow at the University of South Australia. In short, his multi-disciplinary experience covers the areas of material science, chemistry, thin-film coatings, microbiology and cancer diagnostics. Currently, he is amalgamating these areas to scale up an industrial project for bladder cancer detection. This work is a Cooperative Research Centres Project in cooperation with clinicians at Flinders University, the University of South Australia and the company SMR automotive. His overarching specialties are biomedical devices and how to improve their integration with their host, while avoiding infections. He loves teaching, giving presentations and networking; as exemplified by him supervising students 1-on-1 (23 so far) and attending conferences (22 so far). Science & engineering is his passion and he blends this his passion for human interaction, politics and current affairs. Thomas follows and asks the “BIG” questions. Thus, how does science shape our society now and in the future? An avid debater, with a sharp mindset on formulating thoughts precisely, paired with a keen desire to listen to a diversity of opinion & worldviews. He uses his analytical and interpersonal skills to create win-win situations in a dynamic environment and lead teams, where all members actively feel appreciated & heard. During his free time, Thomas does physical exercise and mindfulness to keep a healthy mental balance. This is complemented by hiking & enjoying the great Australian outdoors and walking his two dogs, George and Lira. Furthermore, he likes to read scientific and historical books and use his scientific skills to perfect his home-brewing.
