About me
A/Prof Tuan Nguyen is an NHMRC-ARC funded Dementia Research Development Fellow. His current research lies on the development and implementation of national dementia strategies with a focus on low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), culturally tailored interventions to improve lives of people with dementia and their carers, and medicines that can induce or worsen cognitive impairment and dementia. His expertise covers broad areas, including pharmaceutical policy, pharmaco-epidemiology and drug safety, health care management, public health and behavioural sciences with solid quantitative and qualitative skills.
Before joining the UniSA, Tuan undertook his PhD training at the University of New South Wales. His PhD thesis examined medicines prices and pricing policies in Vietnam, resulting in a novel model of corruption in the health sector and the first publications to document the contribution of corruption to medicine prices in Vietnam. This work has been recognised internationally and his PhD thesis has been published by the World Health Organization on its website.
Since the commencement of his fellowship in 2016, A/Prof Nguyen has been working on an international scale. He is the founder and leader of a large dementia research collaborative in Asia Pacific region, which is investigating quality use of medicines issues for people with dementia in LMICs in the region, where dementia is a new and emerging health problem. He is also the Principal Investigator for the e-ASIA grant e-DiVA "empower Dementia carers with an iSupport Virtual Assistant", the NHMRC-NAFOSTED grant “Strengthening responses to dementia: Building an evidence platform for the development of Vietnam’s National Dementia Plan” and a Co-Investigator co-leading the dementia research capacity building component of the US NIH R01 grant “Advancing Alzheimer’s family caregiving interventions and research capacity in Vietnam”. He has had >70 publications, 47 conference presentations and has attracted nearly $10 million in research funding.
