About me
Dr Albert Juhasz is an Associate Research Professor within the Future Industries Institute at the University of South Australia, Adelaide. Albert has been involved in contaminant research for the past 24 years. He is a research leader in the fields of contaminant bioavailability-bioaccessibility and exposure assessment. Albert is internationally recognised for his innovative, cross disciplinary research on the refinement of human health exposure through the assessment of contaminant bioavailability-bioaccessibility. Over the past 10 years, Albert has led the development of one of the largest contaminant bioavailability-bioaccessibility databases worldwide. His research has led to significant advancements in knowledge regarding the prediction of arsenic, cadmium and lead relative bioavailability using surrogate in vitro assays. He has also led the development of in vitro assays for the determination of PAH and DDT bioaccessibility in contaminated soils. Predictive linear regression models have been adopted by industry for refining contaminant exposure via the incidental soil ingestion pathway. Outcomes from Albert’s bioavailability-bioaccessibility research has translated into environmental policy refinement for quantifying exposure to environmental contaminants, both nationally and internationally. As part of the National Environmental Protection Measure for the Assessment of Site Contamination (NEPM-ASC) statutory 5 year review, Albert and colleagues reviewed approaches for the assessment of contaminant bioavailability and leachability for refining human health exposure assessment resulting in the production of CRC CARE Technical Report #14 (December 2009). In 2011, Albert was invited by Bioaccessibility Research Canada to contribute to the development of bioavailability-bioaccessibility guidance for Health Canada. A decision framework was developed for the use of bioaccessibility data in human health risk assessment of contaminated sites. In 2013, Albert was invited by the U.S. EPA to contribute to the development of guidance on in vitro bioaccessibility assays for predicting oral relative bioavailability of arsenic in soil. Outcomes were presented to the U.S. EPA Technical Review Workgroup Bioavailability Committee and a white paper is under development for regulatory guidance. Albert has also undertaken exposure assessment projects (on arsenic, lead and PAHs in soil) for all major environmental consulting firms in Australia that assess contaminated land (~40 contaminated sites over the past 5 years) in order to refine exposure for human health risk assessment. He provides bioavailability-bioaccessibility advice to SA Health and has undertaken arsenic bioavailability-bioaccessibility assessment for the Hawai`i Department of Health, Hazard Evaluation and Emergency Response Office.
