About me
Prof Angel Lopez AO is the Head of Human Immunology at SA Pathology, CALHN, in Adelaide, holds an MD from the University of Rosario, Argentina, a PhD from the University of London, UK, and is a Fellow of the Royal College of Pathologists of Australasia. He is an experimental immunologist and haematologist with an international reputation for his work on the structure and function of cytokine receptors and their mechanism of action in health and disease.
Prof Lopez leads a team of hard working and enthusiastic investigators internationally recognized for their work into the βc cytokine family that studies how βc cytokines and their receptors assemble on the cell surface, how they signal and how they influence human health. The work of this laboratory has been highly collaborative involving several academic and clinical groups. His breakthrough discoveries revealed significant new paradigms in cytokine receptor activation that were published in major international journals. Prof Lopez’s team works closely with the pharmaceutical industry enabling the practical application of the laboratory’s insights as demonstrated by the development of several anti-receptor antibodies as potential new treatments of allergic inflammatory conditions and certain leukaemias.
The impact of Prof Lopez’s work has been recognised by his election as a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Health and Medical Science in 2014 and of the Australian Academy of Health and Medical Sciences in 2015. Prof Lopez received the 2010 South Australian Scientist of the Year Award and the 2010 South Australian of the Year - Science Category Award from the SA Government. In June 2017 he was appointed as an Officer to the Order of Australia for his medical and scientific research in the areas of immunology, cell biology and innovative developments in cancer treatment.
Prof Lopez is passionate about mentoring young researchers and promoting medical research excellence. He established (with S Kumar) the Centre for Cancer Biology in 2009 which is a member of the Australian Association of Medical Research Institute, and in 2019 he (together with Prof M Brown and Senator Griffin) was awarded an $80m Commonwealth grant to establish the South Australian immunoGenetics Cancer Institute (SAiGENCI) in South Australia
