Professor Kerin O'Dea is Professor: Nutrition and Population Health in the Centre of Population Health Research, School of Health Sciences. As a scientist she has made major contributions to understanding the relationship between diet and chronic diseases, particularly type 2 diabetes and CVD.
She is probably best known for her novel research on the marked beneficial health impact of temporary reversion to traditional hunter-gatherer lifestyle on diabetes and associated conditions in Australian Aborigines. As a consequence she has a strong research interest in the therapeutic potential of traditional diets and lifestyles.

Professor O'Dea is currently leading an NHMRC Program Grant 'Improving Chronic Disease outcomes for Indigenous Australians: Causes, Interventions, System Change.' Key previous senior academic and research leadership positions include:
Director of the Sansom Institute for Health Research, UniSA (2009-2012)

Deakin University (1988-1997) as Professor of Human Nutrition
Dean of Health and Behavioural Sciences (1993-1994) and Pro Vice Chancellor Research (1995-1996).
She has been an active part of numerous national committees over many years advising government on health and medical research, Indigenous health, nutrition, and diabetes. Kerin served on NHMRC Council and Committees continuously from 1991-2012 and most recently was the inaugural Chair of the Prevention and Community Health Committee.
She is a Board member of Outback Stores. Her current research examines diet and lifestyle in the prevention and treatment of non-communicable diseases (obesity, type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular diseases), with a focus on elucidating the causal pathways and identifying critical intervention points.
She has a particular interest in the therapeutic potential of traditional diets – especially Aboriginal hunter-gatherer and Mediterranean diets – and is committed to a research approach that spans the spectrum from the basic biomedical to the population, and includes quantitative and qualitative methodologies.
