I am an Associate Professor in Mechanical Engineering at UniSA STEM in University of South Australia. Right after completing my PhD at University of Kyoto, I worked as a Postdoctoral Research Fellow in University of California Davis (UCDavis) and University of New South Wales (UNSW).

My current research focuses on innovative surface engineering, bio-manufacturing, design and processing of advanced materials, medical implants, smart biomedical sensors and surgical technology.

About me

My current research focuses on innovative surface engineering, bio-manufacturing, design and processing of advanced materials, medical implants, smart biomedical sensors and surgical technology.

Due to growing aging population and undesired medical complications, health care cost and burden across the world is mounting. Therefore, development of emerging technologies is inevitable. Equipped with advanced research facilities and capacity, my lab collaborates with world leading researchers and takes fundamental interdisciplinary engineering and scientific approach to underpin the burning issues with an aim of developing innovative solutions.

My research activities are highly supported by intramural and external competitive research grants from industry, state, federal, CRC, ARC and OLT funding bodies. To date, I have secured a total research grant of A$2.2m, thanks to those generous agencies. Currently I lead a research team consisting of 2 PhD, 1 Master and 6 undegraduate project students.

My research complements and supports UniSA's key theme “Transforming Industries” thus contributing to sheer economical and societal development within Australia and the world. A recent highlight of my research work is development of an innovative surfacing approach to biodegradable Mg implants and smart sensor for healthcare industry.

To date, I published more than 50 articles in high quality and leading journals and conferences. Among are 38 journals, 11 conferences, 1 book chapter, 1 edited book. Details of my public research profiles can be accessed via ResearchGate, ResearchID, ORCID, Scopus and Google Scholar.

As of now, my h-index is 17 (Google Scholar) and 15 (Scopus), with a total citation of 1229 (Google Scholar) indicating international recognition of my research quality, leadership and scientific contribution in the areas.

Surface engineering for extended wear life of mining drill
Design and development of smart sensors for healthcare industry
Modelling and experimental assessment of biomechanics of engineered implants

Highlights

Fatigue failuire is critical to the operational performance of components. Our paper on "the fatiguelife assessment of laser metal deposited SS 431 alloys" has been published in the leading "International Journal of Fatgue" (Q1, IF=6). Congratulations to our summer vacation cum master student Mya Thit for her excellent work!
Our recent paper on 'Effect of ball burnishing on surface roughness, wettability, mechanical integrity and antifouling resistance of UHMWPE' is published in Surface and Coatins Technology (Q1, IF=5.4, CiteScore=9.2).

Highlights

Nominated by STEM Exec, I successfully completed UniSA's 2024 Leadership Discovery program. Spanned across 4 months, the program enabled me, through series of dedicated workshops and coaching sessions, to learn, practice and build leadership quality and characters that I will entail and apply in my current and future role/s.
I was one of 115 UniSA researchers recognised in 2023 World's top 2% scientists list ranked by Stanford and Elsevier.
As an Invited Professorial Fellowship, I spent two months (June-July 2024) in ENISE of Centrale-de-Lyon in France, and established research collaboration with an internationally leading researcher Prof Jeol RECH. I performed extensively residual stress measurements on ball burnished SS316 alloys made by laser metal deposition. ENISE is a leading specialised engineering institute in France providing industry focused education and skill to the graduates. It was a great experience for me to learn and exchange ideas, culture and expertise on research and education fonts between UniSA and ENISE! My visit to ENISE made further step to solidify and strength partnership and engagement between two universities.
I gave a keynote and invited talk on 'Advances and prospects in surface engineering for transforming manufacturing landscape' in 2023 ICMEE conferene in Xian, China and in 2023 ICAMAE conference in Bengalure, India in November 2023.
I gave a talk in 2023 MISE conference in Brisbane in October 2023, presenting our recent research findings on 'Effect of plasticity burnishing on the fatigue life of laser metal deposited 431 alloys'.
I received the 'Distinguished Keynote Speaker Award' at 5th Int Conf on IMEOM at Dhaka on 27th December 2022.
My interview on ABC Radio, talking about my recent IMCRC project on energy absorbing traffic lights (EATL).

In 2021, I received '10 Year Service Award' from UniSA STEM for my passionate and sustained contribution to teaching, research, engagement and core values of the university.
