About me
Professor Nicholas Procter RN, BA, Grad Dip Adult Ed, MBA, PhD is Chair: Mental Health Nursing and leader of the Mental Health and Suicide Prevention Research and Education Group, UniSA Clinical and Health Sciences.
I am currently Australia's national representative to the International Association for Suicide Prevention (until 2023), and have held senior independent advisory roles, including to the Office of the Prime Minister’s National Suicide Prevention Adviser, National Suicide Prevention Taskforce 2019-2020, and to the Ministers Council for Asylum Seekers and Detention 2009-2018. I am committed to lifelong learning and have completed advanced training in Trauma Informed Practice with the United States Office of Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), and as a Psychological Autopsy Investigator with the American Association of Suicidology. As a three time recipient of UniSA's Chancellor's Award for Excellence in Community Engagement, and author of Mental Health: A Person Centered Approach, Cambridge University Press (CUP) 2017 (2nd edition), I believe being closely connected to practice drives research innovation. With CUP the oldest publishing house in the world, this publication is the first mental health nursing title by this publisher in 500 years. A 3rd edition will be published in 2021. Most recently I received SA's highest mental health honor, the Margaret Tobin Award. At that time the team I lead received the SA Health Partnering with Lived Experience Award. Receiving these two awards is a great honour for myself and my colleagues.
The strategic intent of my work is to partner with people and organisations who can use research evidence and lived experience to make a difference outside of academia. Working as a Communities of Practice, the research I do brings together people with lived experience of mental ill health, clinicians, policy makers and academic faculty. All research undertaken - including PhD student projects - relate to the real world problems of people living with mental distress, the needs of carers, and the next generation of health professionals willing and able to support recovery with dignity. Deep scholarship, deep connectivity and diffusion of the insights through publication and public policy are central in our community engagement strategy.
