Over 30 years experience in technical and managerial positions in the fine chemicals industry and the manufacture of ophthalmic lenses using thermoset and thermoplastic materials. This includes 17 years in a Research and Development role and more recently, 10 years at The Ian Wark Research Institute providing high quality technical support, analysis and consulting services to researchers, students and industry. Philip commenced his career at BDH Limited in the United Kingdom working as a synthetic chemist. After 10 years he transferred to the role of Laboratory Supervisor responsible for the manufacture of Advanced Electro Optic Materials for liquid crystal displays and thermochromic materials used in a variety of applications. In 1984, Philip became Production Manager Advanced Electro Optic Materials coordinating synthesis, purification, formulation and packaging.
After migrating to Australia in 1987, he joined Sola International as Laboratory Supervisor Research and Development, based at Lonsdale, South Australia. There he was responsible for the operation of a busy research laboratory, developing new and improved resin systems and manufacturing methods for ophthalmic and sun lenses. In 1995 Philip was involved in the design and construction of a new Research and Development Building and in 1996, as Laboratory Manager, he took over the running of this Building. In this role Philip developed and implemented a maintenance program, coordinated a number of refurbishment projects, initiated a power management program which reduced consumption by 25% in the 1st year while successfully managing all financial aspects. Philip obtained a City and Guilds Advanced Certificate in Chemical Plant Operation from Poole Technical College, Dorset, UK in 1973. He also holds a Diploma in Occupational Health, Safety and Welfare Management, National Safety Council Australia, 1992. Apart from this, he also completed training in the principles and application of Project Management techniques while employed at Sola International.
