Welcome to my homepage and thank you for your interest. I hold a Bachelor of Applied Science in Physiotherapy, a Master of Physiotherapy in Manipulative and Sports Physiotherapy, a Graduate Diploma in Education Studies (Digital Learning) and a PhD from UniSA.
I am interested in improving the quality and safety of health care through teaching and research in evidence-based practice, implementation and health services research across a range of disciplines including allied health, public health, nursing and complementary and alternative medicine. My research also has a strong industry and end-user focus and engagement and therefore I partner with these stakeholders in implementing and evaluating best practice.
Currently my role is equally divided between academia and research at the Allied Health and Human Performance Unit. I collaborate with a team of academics and researchers in the fields of health services research and implementation science. Health services research is a multidisciplinary field of science which investigates health services, its structures and processes and the patient journey through the healthcare system. This is a unique field of science as it brings together health, social, environmental, personal and organisational philosophies. Simply put this multidisciplinary field of research examines how people get access to health care, how much health care costs, and what happens to people as a result of this care. The health services research group also uses evidence-based practice as a vehicle to improve the quality and safety of healthcare by accessing, synthesising and implementing best available evidence. In particular, researchers within this group, underpinned by the science of evidence implementation, shape, devise and implement behaviour and practice change strategies within health care settings. Members of this group work closely with health professionals, consumers, administrators and policymakers to ensure access to and delivery of quality and safe health care to all Australians.
I was the NHMRC NICS-MAC Fellow from 2008-2010. This Fellowship aimed to improve the management of Whiplash Associated Disorders (WAD) by Physiotherapists and Chiropractors. In 2010, I was awarded a South Australian Tall Poppy Award. This award recognises the achievements of Australia’s outstanding young scientific researchers and communicators. This award was first created in 1998 by the Australian Institute of Policy and Science (AIPS) and aims to promote a more publicly engaged scientific leadership in Australia.
In 2010, I was appointed as the “Visiting Allied and Scientific Health Fellow”. In this role, I work closely with the Allied and Scientific Health Office at the Department of Health, South Australia. Working alongside the Chief Allied and Scientific Health Advisor for South Australia, Ms Catherine Turnbull, my role aims to integrate evidence into policy and practice in allied and scientific health.
In 2020, I was appointed as the UniSA - Calvary Clinical Lead. In this role, I work closely with UniSA and Calvary Adelaide Hospital stakeholders to promote partnership and collaboration across clinical education, research and health care service delivery.
You may write me down in history,
With your bitter twisted lies,
You may trod on me in the very dirt,
But still, like dust, I'll rise.
Just like the moons and like suns,
With the certainty of tides,
Just like hopes springing high, Still I'll rise.
